Oghuz khan

When the Soviet Union collapsed each country needed to find new national heroes. Anyone who has been to Turkmenistan has seen his symbol; the star of Oghuz Khan is on every building, on bank notes and is even the Turkmenistan state emblem. Many other states in the region use this 8 pointed star as well as he is considered one of the fathers of the Turkic people. So Oghuz Khan was a bit of a boss, from the first moment he was born he could talk. The Turkic people were being hassled by a giant dragon, but he managed to first stab through the heart and then cut off its head.

His family however grew wary of his growing power and planned to kill him. Lucky for him, Oghuz got wind of the plot and managed to kill his father first and become the Khan, while his step-mother and step-brother fled to China.

He had several children including Gunes also the official name of our favourite bar in Ashgabat and Yyldyz the name of another one of our favourite places to visit in Ashgabat and with them he went on to wage war against Arab and European powers, most of which he won.

A great national hero, but unlike many other countries around the world, Oghuz Khan is treated in a more rational way, an interesting tidbit of history, in Turkmenistan. Now, part of this is because the stories of his existence are a little bit more of the absurd side of things. A fully grown adult by 40 days old? The other significant reason is that of course the most important national heroes in Turkmenistan are the first President Saparmurat Niyazov Turkmenbashy and of course the current President, Arkadag Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov.

The Oghuz confederation migrated westward from the Jeti-su area after a conflict with the Karluk allies of the Uyghurs. Today, a percentage of the residents of TurkeyAzerbaijan and Turkmenistan are descendants of Oghuz Turks and their language belongs to the Oghuz group of the Turkic languages family. Kara-Khanid scholar Mahmud al-Kashgari wrote that of all the Turkic languages, that of the Oghuz was the simplest.

He also observed that the Oghuz had been separated for so long from the eastern Turks, that language of eastern Turks in east could be clearly distinguished from the language of Oghuz and Kipchak further west. In the 9th century, the Oghuzes from the Aral steppes drove Bechens from the Emba and Ural River region toward the west.

In the 10th century, they inhabited the steppe of the rivers Sari-suTurgaiand Emba to the north of Lake Balkhash of modern-day Kazakhstan. Linguistically, the Oghuz are listed together with the old Kimaks of the middle Yenisei of the Ob, the old Kipchaks who later emigrated to southern Russia, and the modern Kirghiz in one particular Turkic group, distinguished from the rest by the mutation of the initial y sound to j dj.

The Ottoman dynasty, who gradually took over Anatolia after the fall of the Seljuks, toward the end of the 13th century, led an army that was also predominantly Oghuz. The original homeland of the Oghuz was to the east of the Altai Mountains of Central Asia, which had been the domain of Turkic peoples since prehistory. However, Oghuz Khan narratives were actually collected in Compendium of Chronicles by Ilkhanid scholar Rashid-al-Din in the early 14th century.

A number of subsequent tribal confederations bore the name Oghuz, often affixed to a numeral indicating the number of united tribes included.

These include references to the Sekiz-Oghuz "eight oghuz" and the Tokuz-Oghuz "nine oghuz". The tribes of the Sekiz-Oghuz and the Tokuz-Oghuz originally occupied different areas in the vicinity of the Altai Mountains.Related to the Pecheneg[12] they inhabited a shifting area north of the Black Sea and along the Volga River known as Cumaniafrom which the Cuman—Kipchaks meddled in the politics of the Caucasus and the Khwarezm Empire.

The Cuman language is attested to in some medieval documents and is the best-known of the early Turkic languages. The original meaning of the endonym Cuman is unknown.

It is also often unclear whether a particular name refers to the Cumans alone, or to both the Cumans and the Kipchaksas the two tribes often lived side by side. The western Cumans, or Polovtsy, were also called Sorochinetses by the Rus'— apparently derived from the Turkic sary chechle "yellow-haired". Suleymenov polovtsy may come from a Slavic word for "blue-eyed", i. Observing that the Hungarian exonym for Cumans - i. As stated above, it is unknown whether the name Kipchak referred only to the Kipchaks proper, or to the Cumans as well.

This confederation and their living together may have made it difficult for historians to write exclusively about either nation. The Kipchaks' folk-etymology posited that their name meant 'hollow tree'; according to them, inside a hollow tree, their original human ancestress gave birth to her son.
